In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Jefferson County Health Department encourages all women to receive regular screenings to promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Significant advances have been made through increased awareness, breast cancer screenings and better treatments.
The Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (FBCCEDP) provides access to the breast and cervical cancer screenings doctors recommend. The screenings are free or low-cost for those who meet the program eligibility requirements.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in the United States, no matter a person’s race or ethnicity. The American Cancer Society estimates that 20,920 new cases are expected in Florida this year alone. In 2020, 3,060 women in Florida died from breast cancer.
Lisa Griffin says, “Get your mammogram. The earlier the cancer is detected, the fewer issues you will have.”
“Early detection through mammography saved my life over five years ago. Make sure you get your annual physicals, including a mammogram,” says Amy McDaniel.
Join the Jefferson County Health Department on Oct.13 for a Breast Cancer Awareness Event. The event will be held at the Florida Department of Health Jefferson, located at 1255 West Washington St., from 3 to 6 p.m.
