On the weekend of Oct. 21 and 22, the UF/IFAS Extension Office came alive with the excitement and energy of the Old Glory PCA Rodeo. Tickets were sold at the door and welcomed men, women and children of all ages to come in and join in all the fun of their event line-up! Food and beverages were provided by Johnston's Meat Market, and this two-day event was packed with something special for everyone to enjoy.
The events included an exciting conglomeration of events, including bareback riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, saddle bronc, breakaway roping, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding. The show lineup also included a barrel-racing demonstration by Keira Evans, a two-time PCA Barrel Racing Champion. The crowd enjoyed an entertaining rodeo commentary from none other than former PCA Announcer of the Year, Mack Ginn, who has worked as a professional rodeo announcer for over 10 years. Ginn provided thorough rules and regulation explanations, historical context and entertaining play-by-plays, so that even guests who had never been to a rodeo before were able to enjoy the festivities with full understanding of the ins and outs of rodeo merriment. Helping to guide the entertainment, and provide laughs for all, was rodeo clown Trent McFarland, who amused the crowds with his playful antics throughout the evenings.
This event was sponsored by John Evans, who showed his support of the rodeo through his businesses that he co-runs with his daughter, Keira: Bar K Equine Therapy and SE Roofing and Construction, LLC.
Evans says that this year would be the first of many, describing the event as a great success.
“The weekend was a lot of fun,” shared Evans on his social media page after the rodeo weekend, expressing his deep gratitude for all the people who came out in support of the rodeo and made the event possible, and sharing two very special moments that were personal highlights of the weekend.
“My grandmother got to ride in the barrel truck and be recognized at 99 years young. She was able to enjoy her great granddaughter run barrels at point-blank range! That was truly special for me,” says Evans. “And my daughter Keira ran the horse that she had originally won her first PCA money on!”
In addition to a very long list of thanks and shout-outs, Evans shared the following sentiment: “Old Glory PCA Rodeo will be back in Monticello, Fla., on Oct. 20-21, 2023. Just a friendly reminder that we will be putting the smack down in Monticello again, just like I promised! I hope to see all of my Jefferson County people next year!”
So there you have it, Monticello; that's about as early an announcement as they come, and you know what to do: Mark those calendars!
