There are four bus drivers on the road for Aucilla Christian Academy for the 2020-21 school year. We got in touch with two of them who shared their thoughts on the new year.
Brandi Hughes drives bus number 7, the Perry Route, on which she picks up 40-45 students each morning. Brandi has been driving for Aucilla for 13 years. She chose to be a bus driver, like a lot of people who work for schools, to have a work schedule that allowed her to be home with her children when they are home. When she is not driving the students for Aucilla, Hughes enjoys time with her husband of 21 years and their 3 children. Hughes says that, for this year, one challenge they have to confront is for students, and herself, is to get used to wearing masks on the bus. This year, due to the pandemic, everyone must wear masks and students are seated according to family they live with or grade. The one thing Hughes wants the public and parents to know is “that each child is cherished because they are a gift from God.”
Debbie Cordle is Aucilla’s newest driver who has been with the school since the start of the school year, driving the route from Monticello, north almost to the Georgia line, on a route where she picks up 25-30 students. Being a driver gives her the ability to work with kids and equally important (or more) Cordle gets to spend time with her daughter, thanks to her work schedule. Debbie and her husband Steve (your humble reporter) will celebrate 25 years of marriage on October 21. They have one daughter, Amelia, who is a second grader at Aucilla. Some of the challenges of the 2020-21 school year are getting hot from wearing the mask and having to sanitize the busses. One thing Debbie would like parents and the public to know about her job is that she is “like a rock star to little kids because they still think school busses are cool.”
