Once-contaminated site to have fuel tanks removed

County officials recently took action to have the underground fuel tanks removed from a long closed gas station on U.S. 19, allowing for possible redevelopment of the site.
On Thursday evening, March 21, the Jefferson County Commission awarded the contract for the removal and disposal of the underground tanks at the former Thompson’s gas station to Tyson Petroleum Contractors, LLC, of Tallahassee. The county will pay the company $57,666 for the removal work, plus an additional $200 per ton, and $6 per gallon, of contaminated soil or water that is hauled from the location.
