On average, 130 people die by suicide every day. From 1999 to 2019, there were 841,000 fatal drug overdoses. Mental illness affects nearly one in five people. To teach members of our community how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults, Florida Health – Jefferson is offering a one-day workshop this month.
The class is designed for employers, police officers, hospital staff, first responders and other caring individuals. The in-person session takes place on Tuesday, July 21, at the health department, 1255 W. Washington St.. It lasts from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., with lunch provided. Participants will learn the following Mental Health First Aid Action Plan:
• Assess for risk of suicide or harm
• Listen without being judgmental
• Give reassurance and information
• Encourage appropriate professional help
• Encourage self-help and other support strategies
