At the March 17 County Commission meeting, Sheriff McNeill spoke about law enforcement pay. He noted the state would soon be paying entry level law enforcement $50,000. This would have an effect on our local deputies, who start at $35,000. Law enforcement pay is something I’m very familiar with, having spent most of my career working for the Florida Highway Patrol. Many years ago, I spoke to a legislative delegation and observed how the FHP was losing troopers to other agencies for more pay. The FHP was grossly underfunded and understaffed while Florida’s population boomed- as did calls for service.
I recognize Governor DeSantis again for his leadership in righting something that has been wrong for far too long. Law enforcement in recent times has been under attack in more ways than one, so it’s good to see this financial recognition.
Our excellent Sheriff also proved again his leadership skills in helping to orchestrate a pay package for rural counties, so now the pay will be similar. It was also heartening to hear a round of applause in the commission room after he announced that- law enforcement cannot properly operate without the support of the community they serve. He is one big reason why Jefferson County remains a great place to live- and more people are discovering that each year.
