Part of road may be named after military hero

Nearly three years after county officials first proposed the idea of naming a section of State Road 59 after Major John Leroy Haynes, a military hero who recently passed away at age 93, the idea is being revisited.
County Manager Shannon Metty and Sheriff Mac McNeill resurrected the idea at the Jefferson County Commission meeting on Thursday evening, Nov. 16.
The two informed the board of Haynes’ death two days prior, as well as reminding the commissioners of the proclamation that they had passed in 2021 to name the section of SR-59 from U.S. 90 to U.S. 27 in honor of Haynes.
