If you tune in at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night to Wave 94.1 FM Christian Radio, you can hear a full hour of toe-tapping, soul-lifting gospel music on the "Saturday Night Gospel Sing" show, hosted by Pastor Jack King. He returns to the air on Sunday mornings from 8 to 9 a.m. on Wave 94, with a talk show called "Gospel on the Radio." This show features interviews with people from various Christian perspectives, with interludes of music and commentary mixed in. For a daily devotional dose from Pastor King, listen weekdays at 11 a.m. on Wave 94 to his "Gospel on the Radio" spots, also distributed worldwide by Praise Radio.
In-person on Sunday mornings, you can find Pastor King leading services at the Freedom Road Christian Ministry, an Open Bible Church in Tallahassee. He also authored the book Dreams and Visions: Stories of Faith (Peppertree Press, 2018).
Though King could be considered a Jack of all trades — he operates King Cars in Waukeenah and provides a lawn maintenance service as well — his passion is the Bible.
"I'm a Bible preacher. I love the Bible, and I teach the Bible," says King. He takes a particular interest in teaching young people. For more than 30 years, up until 2012, he was the regional youth director for the Open Bible Churches, and in that role, he organized youth camps, Sunfest youth conferences, and youth leadership training programs. He also organized youth camps and conferences for Christian Youth Ministry International.
"I've taken notice that young people are not taught the Bible," says King. "There is a serious disconnect between youth and the Word."
To address this, King has a new idea.
"I'm in the process of building a ministry that will feature 'charter groups' using materials that I provide on the fundamentals of Christianity," says King.
He envisions an online platform where group leaders and small groups of students can access the study materials.
King knew from a young age that he was going to be a pastor.
"I grew up in the church and always loved church," he says.
King attended Cincinnati Bible College, spent four years in the Navy, and then went to Liberty Bible College in Pensacola, where he became active in the Open Bible Churches. For the past 42 years, he has been pastor of the Freedom Road Christian Ministry, supported his wife, Tammy. They have four children, a "spiritual daughter," 12 grandchildren and two more on the way.
