Pastor Dr. Melvin Roberts is the pastor of the Greater Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, located on Cypress Street in Monticello.
He recently celebrated his 18th anniversary as the church’s shepherd, where for all of his years of ministry at Greater Fellowship, he has stood firm on the Word of God in his preaching.
Pastor Roberts has proudly served in ministry for 25 years.
When he relocated to Monticello from Augusta, Ga. many years ago, he became involved with the Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church, where he was an usher, deacon, assistant pastor, and then later served as a pastor. When he was called to pastor at Greater Fellowship, he alternated Sundays with Philadelphia Missionary until he was called to move to serve the Greater Fellowship family full time.
Pastor Roberts is a licensed ordained minister, receiving his Doctorate of Ministry in 1994 at the Bethany Bible College and Theological Seminary in Dothan, Ala.
His continued education actually began in 1974, at Florida A&M University (FAMU) where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. In 1986, he earned his Master's of Education Degree in Guidance and Counseling, also at FAMU.
Pastor Roberts went on to further his knowledge at Florida State University, receiving his Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership in 1991.
Pastor Roberts is an experienced educator, teaching and counseling school-children in the surrounding area for years including Tallahassee, Quincy, Perry, Madison, Greenville and Monticello. He also worked in human resources with the Jefferson County School District Office before retiring. He's taught pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and has been a school principal for most of his teaching years.
Pastor Roberts has been married to Jefferson County native Mary Walker Roberts for “45 years and five months,” he shares. They have two adult children.
Pastor Roberts does have a bucket-list that includes a trip to the Grand Canyon and a trip to New York City, N.Y. When he will find time to travel, only time will tell, because he is keeping himself very busy right now in his ministry.
