Minister and evangelist Steve Cordle is the pastor of the Central Church of Christ at 100 Coopers Pond Road in Monticello, a position he's held since October 2017.
He was led into the ministry shortly after becoming a Christian in 1985. He got into a rotation of speakers in his then-congregation and eventually helped with a church plant. He received such overwhelming and positive feedback that he eventually went into the ministry fulltime. He's been in the ministry for 26 years now.
Minister Cordle has ministered in several pastoral positions in many different churches in five states, including California, Indiana, Colorado, Alabama and Florida; and in two countries, the United States and Canada (St. Catharines in Ontario.)
As a church pastor, his responsibilities haven't varied much from preparing for services and Bible studies on Sundays and Wednesdays. He doesn't get called upon much for counseling and thankfully, he's had very little administrative work to do. That has usually been handled by others.
Minister Cordle shares that the very best part of his ministry service is to help others understand God's love through God's Word. He especially enjoys the baptizing of Christians.
He would like to one day teach in a Bible college. Of course, that would mean he'd have to complete graduate school, and that would be a financial responsibility he is not yet ready to undertake. Currently, he has his Bachelors of Bible, which was obtained from Bear Valley Bible Institute in Denver, Colo.
In October, Minister Cordle will have been married to his lovely bride Debbie for 25 years. They have one daughter, Amelia who is “six and a half,” she states.
He was born at Maxwell Air Force base, in Alabama; when he was 11-months-old his family moved to Alaska. His father was in the Air Force and volunteered hoping it would get him out of a tour in Vietnam. It didn’t work, Cordle says, as his father was sent to Vietnam anyway.
Cordle grew up in Alaska and eventually received a Bachelor's of Arts from the University of Alaska in 1987, in Criminal Justice.
Locally, Cordle is the Employment Specialist at the Jefferson Somerset high school and is finishing up his second term as chairman of the School Advisory Council. He's term-limited, so a new chairman will take over for the 2020/2021 school year.
His family is involved with the Literacy Alliance. He is a member of the Monticello-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and a board member for the Holocaust Educational Resource Council.
He enjoys several hobbies, such as reading, walking and watching airplane flights. Though he never learned to fly an airplane, he was always intrigued by them due in part to his father being a commercial pilot.. He also likes to visit presidential historical sights with his family, and attend the Warbirds Weekend in Atlanta, Ga. He especially enjoys learning about the men and women who flew aircraft during World War II, which he feels is arguably the defining event of the 20th century.
Cordle has no plans to retire, at least not at this time in his life. Right now he's working on complete the writing for his fourth book, a project he began earlier this year, tentatively titled Christianity: For thinkers only.
When asked, what's on his bucket list he shared: “I would like to earn a doctorate and work a polling place on election day and would like to travel to Ukraine for family ancestrial research.”
