Rev. Bethel Ransom has been a Monticello native all of his life and has been preaching the gospel for most of it. That wasn't a part of his plan but the plan that God had for him.
The faster Ransom ran from the calling, the louder God called until one day Ransom says that God clearly and concisely spoke to him and gave him two options: preach or else. Ransom said he still doesn't want to know what the “else” is, so he's been preaching ever since. He started doing so wherever the spirit would hit him, in the fields, on the highway, wherever and whenever.
In 1976, he began his pastoring journey at Sweetwater Missionary Baptist Church. He remained there until being named Assistant Pastor in 1984 at Young Reaper Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville, Fla. He went on to become the Pastor and stayed in that position until he retired in 2008 to concentrate on his music. Ransom is recognized too as a singer and keyboardist. He came out of retirement in 2018 to assume the role as Pastor at a church in Quitman, Ga. but that assignment ended with the onset of Covid-19. He is now the Pastor of First Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Brooks County, Ga.
Ransom and his wife Lillian have three children. When he is not preaching he enjoys raising his cattle, gardening and being a musician.
Ransom's advice to all people regardless of age, gender or race is to always be obedient to God's word and to be aware that He makes no mistakes and will equip you with all you need to do whatever He assigns. Ransom says that there are more ways than just preaching that we can serve God and that there is always something good in whatever He prepares you to do. He emphatically stated that there will be times when we pray and it looks like God isn't coming but He's always right on time.
The same can be said for Rev. Bethel Ransom, who proves that every day, from the pastures to the pulpit.
