The very fact that Jefferson Somerset Tigers were even playing football on Friday, Nov 15, could have been a surprise to some, as the Tigers struggled during a very challenging season. But the very challenge of the season was enough to land the Tigers in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 1 A State Playoffs.
At the end of the season, the Tigers found themselves as the number six seed in the six-team Region Two tournament. This determination was based, in large part, on the strength of the Tigers' schedule this season.
In the first round of the tournament, the Tigers faced a very familiar foe, Sneads High School.
On Friday, Nov. 8, it was the third time this season that Jefferson Tigers had faced the Sneads Pirates.
The third time proved to be a charm for the Tigers, who defeated the third-seeded Pirates, 21-7. This set up the contest between the Tigers and a long-time rival, the Bulldogs of Taylor County High School, on Friday, Nov. 15, in the Region Two Semi-final match-up. The Bulldogs were the number-two seed and, as such, served as the host team.
It was a wet, cold evening at Dorsett Stadium, in Perry, Fla., as the Tigers met the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs quickly built an early lead and the score was 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs extended their lead during the second quarter to carry a 35-0 lead into halftime. The Tigers were able to get on the scoreboard with a touchdown late in the third quarter, but this proved to be futile as the Bulldogs rolled to a 42-7 win over the Tigers.
The Tigers ended their 2019 football season with a 3-9 record.
