I often use the phrase ‘The oxymoron known as government efficiency” to illustrate how inefficient government can be. I was very pleased to see President Trump carry through with the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE in order to make the federal government more efficient- and less costly. One thing he has mentioned doing is dumping the postal service (USPS) and placing it under the Department of Commerce. I applaud him for doing something worthwhile. In my lifetime, the USPS has gone from a relatively efficient service to one that routinely loses and misdirects packages. Just in the past month, I’ve had two packages that were mailed from relatively close by either get lost or misdirected. In one case, the item from the Atlanta area has been lost in Atlanta for over 2 weeks. The USPS solution? A “Missing Mail Search Request” which to date has done nothing- not that my expectations were high, since the USPS up front says it likely won’t do anything to find the item. The second item originated in nearby Albany, and managed to go from there to Tallahassee as it should have. But then it went to Midway- the wrong direction from Monticello- and from there instead of being returned to Tallahassee it’s now in Jacksonville. This same thing has gone on for several years, I’ve had items make it to Florida and then go north. I’ve had a parcel stolen from the Tallahassee post office and when I filed a complaint, no one cared. I’m one person. Multiply this by hundreds of thousands and the scope of the problem becomes apparent.
The fact is Donald Trump for all of his flaws and annoyances is the closest thing to a Libertarian President we’ve had in my lifetime. All of the complaining is to be expected when people that have become over reliant on government find out they need to take more responsibility. Now that he has targeted spending and is making use of tariffs to balance trade, maybe we can get rid of income tax and replace it with taxes on gains only- income left over after things needed to survive such as food, shelter, etc. That combination alone would truly make America great again.
