Reading needs to start early

Dear Editor, I have been in education for over 35 years, and it breaks my heart to see so many children start school without learning experiences and language needed to succeed. Young children are given an inordinate amount of screen time and not enough story time with a caring adult. The words children hear matter! Did you know the words your child hears directly affects his or her readiness for school? Furthermore, the understanding of language can affect a child’s academic and career path, social status and mental. Who or what is the source for your child’s words? Television?
