The pharmaceutical company that produces Equate, CVS Health and Family Wellness brand of infant’s ibuprofen has issued a recall for all three brands of children’s pain reliever due to the products having been found to carry potentially higher concentrations of ibuprofen.
The recalled brands are carried in Walmart, CVS and Family Dollar stores around the United States.
“There is a remote possibility that infants, who may be more susceptible to a higher potency level of drug, and therefore may be more vulnerable to permanent NSAID-associated renal injury, ”read the recall published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday, December 5.
Infants and young children who may be vulnerable to the higher potency of the drug may suffer adverse effects, such as nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, or diarrhea as a result of the higher concentrations of ibuprofen.
Other possible effects could include tinnitus, headache and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Since the issue of the recall, the pharmecutical company, Tris Pharma, Inc., had not received any reports of adverse events due to the recalled children’s medication.
Frequently used as a pain reliever as well as a fever reducer, the ibuprofin was sold in 0.5 ounce bottles in stores around the nation.
Tris Pharma, Inc. has arranged for the recalled products that were on store shelves at the time of the recall to be returned to them for proper disposal, but there are concerns that parents and caretakers might have already purchased the recalled products.
If you or a family member have recently purchased any of these three brands of infant ibuprofen, Tris Pharma and the FDA advises that the product should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
