A new tradition is in the works at the Jefferson County Recreation Park — the Fall Ball Softball program. The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for fun, development and competition for local girls.
A one-time $35 registration free will cover the whole season (Sept. 1-Dec. 4.), as well as the cost of softball attire, which will be provided for each player. Games will be planned for Mondays, Tuesdays and/or Thursday evenings, with practice times to be determined by coaches. The program offers two age divisions, ages 7-11 and ages 12-16. The registration deadline is Aug. 17 for both.
Organizer Erin Greene says that there are three things the program needs to succeed from the community: players, coaches and umpires.
The most vital part of the program is the people who it's for: local girls. More participants means more teams to engage in friendly competition with one another, more opportunities to play and more potential in the seasons to come.
The program will also rely on volunteers willing to offer their time and expertise to serve as coaches for the players. Coaches are responsible for providing valuable mentorship supporting the players and sharing a love of the sport throughout the season.
Umpires are a paid position of $30 per game.
