Jason Shoaf, Florida House Representative District 7, was guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Keystone Federated Republican Women’s (KFRW) group in May. He spoke to the group about the importance of voting, voter fraud and election integrity; what to expect from our elected officials; where our money goes and how it's used; about our rights and the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that our right to a peaceful protest has not been taken away, it's been protected. He talked about tax cuts, saying, “I wish I could've done more.” His presentation ended with a very spirited question and answer session. “The answers are in new technology,” he said. “So, let's get back to work.”
Rep. Shoaf and Community Outreach Chairperson Gretchen Wallace congratulated and awarded the 2021 Essay Contest winners during the May meeting. The winners were Vera Peters, first place, $250; Waylon Peters, second place, $150; and Allie Dollar, third place, $50. All three students are part of the homeschool community, and wrote their essays on spies. Vera Peters chose to write about Caleb Brewster, a member of “Culper Spy Ring”. Waylon Peters and Allie Dollar chose to write about James Armistead, a “Double Agent” for the Continental Army. The essay topic was “American Patriots of the Revolutionary War and Founding of America.”
The essay contest exemplifies the club’s commitment to civic education of Jefferson County’s rising generation. Wallace, along with the 16 essay Contest participants, will be the program for the June 28 meeting of the KFRW. They have all been invited to attend and share what they learned. So, mark your calendars and come support these 16 students. Let’s learn just some of what they learned.
The 16 essays were received from Jefferson County middle school-age students attending Jefferson Somerset, Aucilla Christian Academy and Homeschoolers. They were graded by a panel of three judges who chose the winners based on quality, accuracy, writing ability and grammar.
Winner of the May “One in a Melon” raffle basket was Crystal Putnam. The basket was prepared and donated by member Debbie Snapp.
The KFRW will have a booth at the Watermelon Festival on Friday and Saturday, June 18 and 19. Stop by and check out the patriotic merchandise for sale just in time to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day on July 4. The group will also be participating in the festival parade; handing out small United States flags, red/white/blue beads and patriotic pencils to those along the parade route. Just look for their red shirts and patriotic hats.
The club meets on the fourth Monday of each month at the American Legion Post 49, 1065 S. Water St., in Monticello, at 7 p.m. A members meeting follows the speaker. The door opens at 6:30 p.m., with new member information available at 6:40 p.m.
The June raffle basket, “Made in the USA”, will be prepared and donated by member June Campbell.
