An annual ritual for parents and students is a trip to the store for school supplies. Each year parents stock up their children to prepare for another year of reading, writing and arithmetic. As the years have passed costs for some items have risen and if a parent has more than one child to purchase supplies for, the final price can be steep.
This is where many churches, such as Monticello’s Restored Glory Christian Center, have stepped up and helped meet an important need. At the start of every school year since 2007, the church has given school supplies to families in Jefferson County. Pastor Eddie Yon and his members continued with their giveaway this year, despite COVID concerns. “Our heart is to continue doing it because we like blessing the community,” said Pastor Yon. Knowing the need in the community, Restored Glory Christian Center continued the service that they have provided for many years.
A total of about 500 backpacks were handed out, including 125 to students at the Greenville Madison Learning Center.
Each backpack contains the usual school supplies such as pens, pencils, rulers and pencil boxes. In a sign of the times, also included are hand sanitizer and a packet of at least three disposable face masks due to covid concerns. Not only are supplies given out at the beginning of the year, Pastor Eddie Yon also performs what he calls an “injection,” in which he distributes pencils to the school regularly. Students use a lot of pencils throughout the year, especially in math classes where it is common for the teacher to require all work handed in to be written in pencil, not pen. To help with this need, Restored Glory purchased approximately 21,000 and distributes them throughout the school year, which takes care of a need that is often overlooked. Students frequently begin the school year with plenty of supplies, but over the course of the year those supplies of pencils and other items runout, which makes Pator Yon’s injections all the more important.
