On Saturday, April 9, amidst the kick-off spring ball games, the Jefferson County Recreation Park held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new concession stand. The new stand certainly got a good test run for its first day, with hundreds of parents, ball players and game spectators coming out to enjoy the nine different games of the day stopping in and grabbing a tasty snack of nachos, chips, soda, candy and more, offered at the concessions.
Providing free hot dogs to the hungry masses of ball-park attendees, as well as hamburgers and sausage dogs for the concession stand, was Pastor David Prevatt of San Pedro Baptist Church in Perry, Fla. Prevatt works with Skinnie P's BBQ, a mission-based operation that uses a portion of its profits to fund missions of the church.
While the hype was definitely high for the new snack stand, this new addition to the rec park is just one of the many improvements made, and according to County Commissioner Chris Tuten, there is still more work to be done. “The ball is rolling in the right direction,” says Tuten, “We've got a new concession stand, we've got new fencing, we've got new tennis courts that have been resurfaced. We have so many new things going on around here, and I love seeing all these kids and all these families out here enjoying the new playground, where we've improved what we already had.”
Tuten gave special thanks to Recreation Park Director Mike Holm, who has been able to use the funding from the Board of County Commissioners to make such a great impact in restoring the park.
“It fills my heart with joy to see what we're doing, and the direction we are going. Especially for these t-ballers, these young kids, I want to keep it like this all the way up to their little league. So thanks for everyone for bringing their kids out, signing up to play the programs, and huge thanks to Mike, we got him the resources he needed to turn this place around, and look what he has done!
A spokesperson from Florida Power and Light (FPL) stepped forward to say, “At FPL, we are committed to be partners to the communities that we serve. We really appreciate the opportunity to be here,” He thanked several members of the commission, chamber and the community as a whole before continuing, “We are committed to the next generation of America's leaders, and that starts right here on the ball field.”
Monticello-Jefferson Chamber of Commerce President Tami Lester presented County Commissioner Gene Hall (District 2: Chairman) and County Commissioner Chris Tuten (District 1) with a Proclamation certificate, and Mike Holm took on the honors of cutting the official ribbon for the Jefferson County Recreation Park concession stand, accompanied by hearty applause.
