Rotary International of Monticello is again accepting applications for its Military Tribute Banner Program. Each banner features the photo, name and branch of service for a different veteran. Any veteran living in the Jefferson County or any family living in the county who has a deceased veteran they wish to honor is eligible to apply.
Rotary President Anna Likos became inspired to have the local Rotary chapter undertake this Military Tribute Banner project last year after seeing how some other small towns in America have given their veterans similar recognition. The first phase of the project produced 36 banners that were displayed last Fall around the Courthouse Circle, and Rotary is ready to order more for an even bigger display this year. The goal is to show the banners for four weeks this November, encompassing Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving.
Anyone eligible to request a banner needs to apply by Thursday, Sept. 7, so that the banners can be created by this November. To apply, send a completed application and a high resolution photograph of the veteran to Rotary of Monticello, P.O. Box 781, Monticello, Fla. 32345, or submit it digitally by emailing the information and photo file to rotanna23@gmail.com.
It is important to ensure that the photograph has a resolution high enough to look good when enlarged for printing at banner size. The vendor who makes the banners recommends scanning photos at a minimum of 300 dpi for a 3” x 5” or larger photo. For smaller photos, increase the resolution to 600-1200 dpi. For yearbook size photos, 2400 dpi is recommended. Proper scanning of the photograph can be done at the office of the Property Appraiser, Angela Gray. To do this, bring the photograph, labeled with the name of the honoree during business hours to the office, located at 480 W. Walnut St.
Application forms may be obtained several ways. It is printed here with this article and can be cut out to use. Informational brochures with an application form are available at the Monticello News office (180 W. Washington St.), the Chamber of Commerce (420 W. Washington St.), the Property Appraiser's office, American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 251. To receive a brochure in the mail, call Likos at (850) 728-2917 or email rotanna23@gmail.com.
Applicants do not pay a fee to have the banner produced. Rotary pays for the banners, printing as many as their banner fund allows. To fund as many banners as possible, Rotary will gladly partner with donors who wish to support the program! Sponsoring a banner costs $60, and donors can cover the cost of any banner or designate one or more particular honorees whose banners they wish to pay for.
For more information about applying for a banner or becoming a donor, contact Likos at (850) 728-2917.
