Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service and advance goodwill and peace around the world. Like many towns, even the smallest, Monticello has a Rotary Club active in the community.
When the Monticello Rotary Club held their weekly meeting on Friday, Dec. 4, it was announced that the club’s results in the annual Peanutbutter Challenge exceeded results from the previous two years! For the 2020 challenge, the club collected 613 pounds of peanut butter, the most the club ever collected. The 613 pounds and 249 jars far exceeded the club’s totals from the last two years. In 2018 they collected 302 pounds, then in 2019, the Monticello Rotary Club picked up 223 pounds of peanut butter. The Rotary Club beat Kiwanis in the two clubs' annual rivalry, as the Kiwanis Club only collected 387 pounds and 134 jars.
The next big project for Rotary is the JOY Toys that help perpetuate Christmas cheer by distributing toys to boys and girls in Jefferson County. In preparation for that, most of the members adjourned to the old high school auditorium to sort the toys and prepare them for distribution, which will occur on Friday, Dec.18, at the old high school auditorium, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Masks are required, as is adhering to COVID-19 protocols.
