Sarah Jane Ransom Byford, aka “Mama Sarah,” was born on Sept. 1, 1952 in Monticello, Fla.
She was the daughter of the late Ben and Henrietta Ransom. Sarah gave her life to Christ at an early age, and became a member of the Sweetfield Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a faithful mother of the church.
She attended Howard Academy, graduating with the Class of 1970, and later received a collegiate education at Florida A&M University, graduating with the Class of 1978 Summa Cum Laude.
Sarah started her career as a Special Education teacher shortly after graduating college.
In October of 1981, Sarah was united in holy matrimony to George Byford, Sr., and to their union two sons were born, George Jr. and Alkota Byford.
She worked and retired as a Special Ed teacher from ARC. She later became an entrepreneur, residing over the Byford's Group Home, CRSS where she provided services for the mentally or physically disabled adults throughout the surrounding counties for many years.
She will be missed dearly for her loving kindness, nurturing spirit, words of wisdom and her lovely hymnals.
Sarah leaves to cherish her memory two sons, George and Alkota Byford, four sisters, five brothers and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Her oldest brother preceded her in death.
A public viewing will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31. Those who wish to attend and pay their respects are asked to please continue to adhere to the CDC safety guidelines by wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing during the viewing and respecting capacity limits.
