ACA graduate and Auburn University golf standout Megan Schofill distinguished herself yet again recently, this time at the 120th North & South Women’s Amateur in North Carolina.
After three rounds of stroke play, followed by four rounds of match play, Schofill was runner-up at the Women’s North & South, which is reputed to draw the top amateur women golf players from around the country. Schofill was one of two finalists in the championship match, with the win ultimately going to Emilia Migliaccio, of Cary, N.C.
The tournament was held Thursday through Saturday, July 14-16, at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, whose turtleback greens the experts describe as superb and challenging.
Going into the three-day competition, Schofill was considered among the stronger and more experienced contenders, being a veteran of the greens from the previous year, when she made the semifinal, only to lose to Anna Morgan of South Carolina.
It’s reported that in the recent competition, Schofill found herself down early in her match on Thursday after losing two of the opening three holes to Amber Park of Texas. Schofill, however, is reported to have strung together a birdie-par-par stretch on holes 4 through 6 and gone on to win the match 3 and 2.
“It’s just confidence,” Schofill was quoted saying afterwards. “I got down in a few matches last year. I think I played two or three extra holes in each match. So I know I can just never give up. I was down here early and got back ahead, and then I was able to play normal, steady golf the rest of the way to win.”
Schofill next defeated Melanie Green by a 2 and 1 score on Friday in the quarterfinal.
“I felt like I was a lot more consistent this afternoon,” Schofill said after her defeat of Green, which assured her return to the semifinal for the second consecutive year. “I hit a lot more quality shots. I didn’t get myself into too much trouble. I made pars and made a few good birdie putts down the stretch. It was just really solid.”
On Saturday, Schofill and Migliaccio, both veterans of the North & South Amateurs, vied for the championship, with Migliaccio ultimately claiming the Putter Boy trophy.
Schofill is a senior at Auburn University, where her golfing prowess has distinguished her from day one.
