It was Megan Schofill, a native of Jefferson County, who raised the 91st Women’s Amateur Championship on Sunday, July 12 at Mission Inn Resort & Club, in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. In order to capture her win, Schofill overcame a 10-shot deficit that launched her into her first championship with the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA).
“It’s such an honor,” Schofill said. “I’ve played in this event for the last five years and have always played really well. So just wanted to do that again this week. I’m just beyond words right now, so happy.”
It was a tough start for Schofill, who began her play with a double bogey on the first hole. Schofill quickly rebounded, birding three of her next five holes to move to three-over for the championship. She kept her game rolling on the front side, adding a birdie on the ninth hole.
An Auburn University sophomore, Schofill began the back nine with a par on the 10th and then carded three-straight birdies to pull into a tie for the lead with Madison Hewlett, another young Floridian golfer, at one-under. A birdie on the 16th gave Schofill the outright lead she needed to go on and capture her championship win.
“I just went out there and played one shot at a time and didn’t worry about the outcome,” Schofill said. “To be honest, I had no expectations to win after my first two rounds.”
She finished the round with a par on the final hole to post a five-under 67. Thinking she had finished a few shots back of the leaders still out on the course, it was Schofill’s dad, Bill Schofill of Jefferson County, who told her she had the clubhouse lead at one-under.
Schofill’s final-round 67 was the low round of the day. She became the first Auburn University player to win the Women’s Amateur Championship.
Schofill is currently a freshman at Auburn University, of Georgia, where she is a Tiger under the university's golfing program. She is majoring in communications at the university.
Prior to her collegiate attendance, Schofill attended and graduated from Aucilla Christian Academy (ACA). It was at ACA that Schofill began playing golf under the tutelage of ACA Golf Coach David Jackson. As a child, Schofill attended Jackson's golf camps ever summer and her dad would take her out to local greens to practice.
Now, Schofill is a nationally and internationally recognized golfer who has several championship wins, honorable mentions and titles under her belt.
Scholfill is the daughter of Bill and Paulette Schofill.
