On Monday, March 30, the Florida Department of Education advised that all school districts in the state will remain closed throughout the month of April. In keeping with the department's recommendations, the Jefferson Somerset will also remain closed.
ECB Publishing, Inc. reached out to Jefferson Somerset Principal Cory Oliver and Vice-Principal Andre Gainey to inquire about how this postponement will impact school lunches, graduation plans and education for local students.
As of press time on Tuesday, March 31, reporters had not received a response from the school regarding these inquiries.
Reporters will continue to follow this story and provide an update within a later publication.
In addition, Superintendent of Schools Marianne Arbulu stated that the Jefferson County School Board still plans to hold its monthly board meeting on Monday, April 13 – but the board will be making changes in order to protect the public, school district staff and board members.
“The board meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 13, 2020 as a virtual meeting with a conference call-in capability for the public,” said Arbulu.
This process is still being worked through, with more details on how the public can participate to come at a later date.
The school district office will continue to be closed to the public for the time being, with school district staff working remotely from home and from the district office.
The public can still contact Superintendent Arbulu by emailing marianne.arbulu@jeffersonschooldistrict.org or School District Administrative Assistant Ramona Kinsey at Ramona.kinsey@jeffersonschooldistrict.org.
