Volunteers have removed a rotting deck that covered the holding pond situated between the front of the Jefferson Senior Citizens Center (JSCC) and North Jefferson Street (U.S. 19.) More than 20 community members came out for the cleanup day, including JSCC staff, members of the JSCC Board of Directors and handy folks from two churches, the Monticello First United Methodist Church and Central Baptist in Aucilla. They worked on Thursday, Oct. 14, and Saturday, Oct. 16, to eliminate the deck hazard, extend the safety fencing around the now-exposed concrete pond, organize the library and clean out several storage areas.
The JSCC resumed weekday activities for senior citizens in July. Board Member Jack Manucy says the Board hopes to have fundraising and other special events again soon, as the pandemic wanes.
A full calendar of weekday activities occur at JSCC, 1155 N. Jefferson St., beginning at 10 a.m and lasting until 2 p.m.
At 10 a.m. each weekday, participants do the Pledge of Allegiance and then discuss current events. At 10:30, participants exercise or interact with a special guest speaker. After that until lunchtime, there's either a bingo game or another activity to boost one's brainpower. Meals are served Monday through Friday at noon. After lunch on Mondays through Wednesdays, there is time for socializing or playing more games. On Thursdays at 1 p.m., it's arts-and-crafts time. On Fridays, the social hour includes a movie. Departure time each day is 2 p.m.
