Friends and family of the late Sheriff David Hobbs came out in large numbers on Friday, Nov. 6, for the unveiling of a sign that will designate the approximately 20 mile section of US Highway 19 between Capps and the Georgia state line as the "Sheriff David C. Hobbs Memorial Highway."
The ceremony was held in the yard outside the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Several dignitaries were on hand for the unveiling, Mc'd by current Jefferson County Sheriff Mac McNeill.
After the introduction of guest dignitaries, Jefferson County property Appraiser Angela Gray paid tribute by singing a moving version of Dancing in the Sky. Retiring State Senator Bill Montford (D-Third District) spoke, as did life long friend Jerry Boatwright. The words spoken were a testament to Hobbs' high character as a professional and as a family man. Senator Montford remarked how everyone in the state capitol building knew Hobbs. When Hobbs was in Tallahassee, he often stopped by the senator's office.
Sheriff McNeill told how he was with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and on his first visit to a Monticello restaurant when Hobbs came in. While not sure who he was at first, once McNeill saw the badge and pearl-handled pistol, he knew it was the sheriff. McNeill said Hobbs went around the room and spoke to many people while they sat at their tables. Eventually, he came around to McNeill's table, and the two talked.
Hobbs’ son-in-law, Benjamin "Glen" Bishop, spoke with fond memories of his father-in-law and the devotion Hobbs his wife and children that Hobbs had. Opening the ceremony, Pastor Isaac Manning, Jr. led an invocation, while Mike Feehan closed it out with the benediction at the end.
