On Thursday, June 16, in the area of North Waukeenah St. and Chestnut St., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and the Monticello Police Department (MPD) attempted to make contact with persons of interest in several felony cases. The group fled the area when law enforcement arrived on scene. One person in the group shot at a JCSO vehicle occupied by two deputies, striking the driver’s side window. Law enforcement from both local agencies, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) converged on the area and set up a perimeter covering the northeast section of the City of Monticello. The FHP deployed a tracking K-9 and a drone. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) provided resources to assist with the scene and investigation.
Within a few minutes of the shooting, Devonte Hawkins was detained by deputies and later charged with two counts of attempted murder. Several of the individuals who ran from the scene were later found and interviewed by the JCSO detectives and an investigator with the 2nd Judicial State Attorney’s Office. One of those individuals, Trayrion Brown, was also arrested by the MPD for one count of written terroristic threats of mass shootings and one count of violation of probation. Multiple firearms were recovered, and the scene was released by 11 p.m. Two JCSO deputies received medical attention on scene for minor injuries from the broken glass that resulted from the bullet being shot into the patrol car.
“I would like to personally thank all of the agencies who assisted with this incident and all of the agencies from the surrounding counties who called to offer whatever help we needed. We especially appreciate this community’s outpouring of support and their support of law enforcement as a whole,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Mac McNeill.
