Granny Kat's Apiary Supply & Bee Learning Center is a local owned business, not just specializing in the making of honey, but also in the life of bees. Granny Kat's has an operating classroom allowing up to 30 students at one time, four microscopes, indoor observation hive, outdoor hives and full kitchen to extract pure honey and bottle it.
The classroom is set up for all ages, teaching that bees are insects with wings closely related to wasp and ants, known for their role in pollination and in the case of the best-known bee species, the western honey bee, for producing honey. Using the four microscopes you can study the parts of the insects at a closer level learning things such as: honey bees have lapping mouth parts called the labium and maxillae. The indoor observation hive is set up for the study of the hive in a controlled environment keeping bees at bay and seeing the inner workings through glass panes. Granny Kats feels if you educate yourself on these topics that people will start to see the greater good of bee colonies and the true purpose for them in this world.
Granny Kat's has a full functional kitchen where they extract the honey from their 40 local hives and package them for sale in their store. Last year they extracted approximately 30 to 40 gallons of honey. They will also spin and extract honey for local residents that do not have the equipment to do so themselves. You will find many different things made from the honey and wax of the hive such as lip balms, soaps and honey.
Granny Kat's takes pride in their business and only sells the finer things. They try to do their best to keep everything in the store handcrafted for purchase . They sell handcrafted wooden clocks, home decor, jewelry, books for all ages, hair supplies and everything you need to start up your own hives. All the boxes for the hives are assembled in a workshop inside Granny Kats.
Granny Kat's, where knowledge of your ecosystem and how it works is their specialty. Located at 407 Industrial Park Dr., Monticello, getting a brief lesson on how mother nature and her bees work is just around the corner.
