The Rapid Response Team and K-9 Team from Jefferson Correctional Institution (JCI) were joined by members of the Monticello Police Department (MPD) on Tuesday, April 18, to carry the Special Olympics Flame of Hope through part of Jefferson County.
The officers gathered on the south steps of the Jefferson County Courthouse, lit the torch and marched it down South Jefferson Street to Winn Dixie.
Major Julie Crews of JCI said, “Jefferson Correctional Institution is partnering with Special Olympics, carrying the Flame of Hope. We will do our run and then we will pass it on to the next county. This is something we've been involved in for many years.”
MPD Chief Fred Mosley said, “We are here to support the Special Olympics and the Torch Run.”
Law enforcement agencies across Florida act as Guardians of the Flame, carrying the Flame of Hope through each county. The Torch Run culminates with the Final Leg at the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games. The Law Enforcement Torch Run directly benefits the nearly 60,000 athletes of Special Olympics Florida.
