It has long been thought that sports is a great way for young people to get into or maintain physical health, but now there is evidence that engaging in sports may also be beneficial to mental health.

Exercise releases feel-good endorphins. Endorphins are the body's way of boosting mood and curtailing moodiness. At the same time, sports and exercise reduce stress hormones, further improving mood.
