Sunbeam bread is a product made by Quality Bakers of America, and has been around for more than 60 years. Little Miss Sunbeam, the bread's mascot icon, was created by artist Ellen Barbara Segner, who was an illustrator for children's books in the 1940's. Each year during the holiday season Sunbeam bread offers a special packaging on their bread. This special change happens every year around Thanksgiving and shows Little Miss Sunbeam with her head bent in prayer with twinkling stars in the background. The words “Not by bread alone” are written on the icon, taken from the Bible in Matthew 4:4. The full Matthew 4:4 scripture reads: Jesus answered, “It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”
Quality Bakers of America chose to use the words of Jesus, speaking on the fact that we will live on the words of God (Jesus is the Word – John 1:1), not on any material or physical thing. What a beautiful message and reminder for the Christmas season, with a really neat history to go along with it. Jesus came to us in the flesh, He is the bread of life, and His body was broken. The ability to truly live comes from an understanding that Jesus was born so that we could have life. We can be thankful that a tiny baby came to be the bread of life for us, and thanks to Sunbeam bread for the reminder of the real reason we can celebrate this season!
