Sweet Honeysuckle is one of Monticello's newest business additions in the downtown area!
Owner and operator Brianna Johnson and her husband, James have been working tirelessly to get their unique vintage, furniture and housewares store open for the community to take pleasure in shopping. From the oldest piece being an immaculate 1920s vertical steamer trunk to a LongHorn Bull BBQ Grill. The shop also carries re-purposed and renovated furniture, painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
You will just never know what you will find shopping in this “sweet” shop!
“I want to build relationships and offer things that are unusual and different,” says Johnson. “I like different. I want my customers to enjoy the atmosphere as much as I do, this is my happy place! I make sure to keep plenty of chairs around to enjoy a nice chat if you ever want to just drop in!” Brianna also states, “One of my main focus’ is to support veteran-owned businesses! I carry four different lines of products, starting with local veteran-owned “Kickin Cowboy BBQ Sauce” out of Belle, Fla., “Duke Cannon Supply Company” out of Minneapolis, Minn., “A Southern Lifestyle Company” out of Savannah, Ga.; and “The General’s Hot Sauce” out of Columbia, S.C., where the bottle is shaped like a hand grenade!”
The couple began renovations at the shop in early April 2020 and first opened their doors to the public towards the end of June.
“I started with consignment at the Country Store in Madison, Fla., then I graduated to a booth, and that developed into pursuing my own store,” Johnson continues, “and now here we are!”
Undertaking the task of opening a business during the COVID-19 pandemic was a move that, Johnson shares, most people she was crazy for acting on; while other shops were limiting hours or closing up completely, Johnson and her family were starting something new.
"What better time than now?!" Johnson states. "I have always wanted to own my own business but I could never decide just what it was I wanted to do. I still have dreams, goals and ambition to do more but I really love where I am and am very happy to have been welcomed so nicely into the Downtown Monticello Community!”
Because Sweet Honeysuckle is an official carrier of Annie Sloan Chalk Paints, Johnson says that there will soon be workshops held in the back portion of the store. Fun workshops, Bring-Your-Own-Piece workshops and even having Do-Your-Own stations, if you’d rather use Sweet Honeysuckle's shop space instead of crafting at home.
Johnson also does custom work of in-stock pieces painted to match your home's kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. You can find updates and postings of future pieces and projects on the Sweet Honeysuckle Facebook and Instagram business pages.
Store hours of operation are: Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Sweet Honeysuckle is located in the downtown shopping district, at 230 N. Jefferson St.
