Indy Goodwin Mack and Stefanie Prevatt have been honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars as the 2021-22 VFW Teachers of the Year, both by local Post 251 and VFW District 2.
VFW Post 251 Programs Chairman John Nelson reports that the post designated Indy Goodwin Mack, who teaches third grade at Jefferson Somerset, as the Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Stefanie Prevatt, who teaches agriculture at Jefferson Somerset, as the Middle/High Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Both teachers then advanced to be considered for VFW District 2 Teachers of the Year, along with Teachers of the Year from seven other posts in Northwest Florida. District 2 Commander Durwood Stewart visited Post 251 on March 10 to announce that Mack had been named VFW District 2 Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Prevatt had been named VFW District 2 High School Teacher of the Year. Both teachers, said Steward, had excellent records and achieved good things as educators.
Mack is a Jefferson County local and a graduate of Jefferson County High School class of 1988. She received her bachelor and master degrees from Florida A&M University. Mack has taught at the elementary grade level in Jefferson County for 29 years and is currently teaching the third grade. She and her husband Norman have been married for 26 years and have three children, Christopher, Norman T. and Nortory, as well as four granddaughters. Mack sees the good in all the children coming up through the Jefferson school system and strives to teach the children to perform to the best of their abilities.
Prevatt attended the University of Florida and Kent State Univeristy (Ohio). She started her career as a 4-H Extension Educator and then became a classroom teacher about four years ago.
“I appreciate being recognized for hard work and dedication,” says Prevatt. “I love working hands-on with students and teaching them about where our food and fiber products come from.”
Prevatt, who teaches both middle school and high school students, finds it rewarding to watch her students grow, learn, change and become adults. She and her husband just celebrated their nine-year anniversary. Their blended family includes four children: Jessika, Jeffrey, Zaxyn and Reba Pearl.
Both Mack and Prevatt have been invited to an award ceremony to be held on April 23. At the awards luncheon, the VFW will present plaques and monetary donations to the district teachers of the year as well as VFW awards to EMTs of the Year, Firefighters of the Year, Law Enforcement Officers of the Year, Voices of Democracy speech contest winners and Patriot's Pen essay contest winners.
