Over the years, many different industries have supported Jefferson County and its residents, providing valuable sources of income and job stability for locals. Agricultural staples such as cotton, corn and especially watermelon were especially formidable industries during Jefferson County's early days, as the fertile soil drew in land-buyers and allowed residents to make a living. Jefferson County even became one of the nation's most prominent sources of watermelon seeds during the late 19th century as a major producer. The county's legacy as an agricultural one continues even today with hundreds of farms held within its boundaries.
