On February 16, 2021, The Florida Department of Health Jefferson County Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) collaborated with three local Early Learning Centers (ELC) to empower children to be healthy and smart from the inside out. SNAP is excited to share the Organ Wise Guys Program. The Organ Wise Guys Program uses proven lesson plans that correlate with National Head Start/Early Childhood and STEM standards.
Betsy Rykard, SNAP Program Outreach Manager, conducted eight weekly virtual lessons with the youth at the participating centers. The evidence-based curriculum series, The Organ Wise Guys, links nutrition and physical activity with organ-themed characters to introduce nutrition topics. The three Early Learning Centers that participated in the weekly lessons were Our Blessings ELC, Creative Moments and Little Angels in Training. A total of fifty-nine youth participated in the virtual classes. Each Early Learning Center that participated in the weekly lessons received an Organ Wise Guy doll and a set of DVD videos to continue empowering kids to be healthy and smart from the inside out.
A new eight-week series of virtual classes started on May 4 and was offered to each Early Learning Center through The Florida Department of Health Jefferson County.
