You find them hanging out in front of local businesses, decorating the roadside and standing guard near the Monticello Police Department – each with its own different, unique look.
The scarecrows of Monticello have once more been a popular attraction for visitors and residents.
For those who may have spotted some of the cleverly designed scarecrows around town but not known what the scarecrows were doing (aside from, of course, bringing a bit of humor to the town), the scarecrows are part of an annual tradition hosted by MainStreet Monticello.
The scarecrows made their appearance in Monticello towards the end of September, and will continue to remain until after Halloween.
For the second year in a row, MainStreet Monticello has hosted their autumn scarecrow contest that allow businesses, residents and local groups to design, create and display scarecrows around the town.
Once all the posed and decorated scarecrows have been placed in their designated spots, a panel of judges walk the town and vote on the best-dressed straw men and women.
This year, over 40 scarecrows were submitted for the contest, meaning almost everywhere you looked in downtown Monticello, you'd be sure to spot a snazzy, funny or spooky scarecrow.
From bank robbers to superheroes, law enforcement officers to princesses, ghostly brides, chefs, farmers, and even a bagpipe-playing Scotsman, each scarecrow was entirely unique, creative and intriguing.
The judging for the scarecrow contest has ended, and MainStreet Monticello's judging panel will announce the scarecrow-winner tomorrow night, during the downtown event, Ghoul's Night Out, on Thursday, Oct. 24.
In addition to announcing the winning scarecrow, Ghoul's Night Out will include shopping deals from downtown merchants, refreshments, a “Ghouls Only” dance party and music from DJ Tom on Dogwood Street.
