The Monticello News is undergoing a significant update – the kind of change that has allowed it to be this community's viable, reliable source of local news for 157 years, and counting. We will continue to bring you hometown stories by local writers while at the same time making our operation more cost-effective. The improvements will balance the preferences of our growing digital audience with a continued demand for our printed newspaper.
Publisher Emerald Greene says, “Times have changed, and so must we. In our ongoing effort to keep up with the way our readers consume news, and in response to many requests for more frequent website updates, we’re transitioning to one, single-printed edition each week – delivered every Wednesday – but we’re also updating our website DAILY with fresh, local stories. In essence, you now have a hometown newspaper at your fingertips every day online, and a printed edition delivered to you once a week. It’s the best of both worlds. We remain committed to bringing you the hometown stories you care about, both in print and online.”

For digital readers, daily online posting of our news stories began last week. For print readers, all stories will appear in one, expanded Wednesday edition of the Monticello News beginning Sept. 3, 2025. The Jefferson County Journal, which ECB Publishing, Inc. added just 18 years ago, will have its last issue on Friday, Aug. 29. Content that has been appearing in the Friday paper will be incorporated into the larger Wednesday print edition.
Your hometown newspaper staff remain committed to bringing you all the community news you've come to expect. As usual, we'll be covering government activity, local businesses, school events, sports, farming, outdoor pursuits, the arts, family life, neighbors, pet care, health, local history, automotive topics, holidays, awareness days and more, along with perspectives from contributors in the form of columns, reviews and letters to the editor.
Subscription prices remain a good value while being adjusted as follows:
The Print Package is $60/year for mail delivery of the weekly Monticello News and bi-monthly Front Porch magazine.
The Digital Package is $60/year or $10/month for online access to all daily Monticello News story posts, e-pub uploads and the bi-monthly Front Porch magazine.
The Combo Print + Digital Package is $90/year for all the above.
Readers who buy their papers at distribution points around town will pay $1 per issue beginning Sept. 3, but this will buy a larger paper than was offered for 75 cents.
Since the Monticello News was first printed 157 years ago, its publishers have time and again successfully adapted to developments in the printing process, new technologies that transform news delivery methods and societal shifts impacting the publishing industry. Through it all, this hometown newspaper has never wavered from its dedication to informing our community on the full range of events and issues that shape our shared life. We plan to keep on doing just that.
