MICHELLE MILLER
Before Michelle Miller started working at Honey Lake Clinic, she was not looking for another job. Today, at the clinic, Miller (a RN and BSN) is a facility administrator and the director of medical services, but before, she was working with the Twin Oaks Juvenile Development and the Department of Juvenile Justice - a career she'd been building for 12 years.
“I wasn’t looking for another job,” says Miller. “I had been praying for about two years for God to put me where He wanted me and where I could be used best to glorify Him.” Miller says that during that time of prayer, she received a call from the clinic and the rest, she quotes, “is history.”
Now, Miller has been with the clinic for a year and eight months, and she says that she finds “everything!” rewarding about her career choice. Miller says that being a nurse was her lifelong dream, and was greatly inspired by her mom and grandfather. “My mother is a nurse,” says Miller, “and I always loved the profession.”
Miller followed in her mother's footsteps, and attending nursing school at North Florida College, eventually graduating in a Bachelor's of Science in nursing.
At the Honey Lake Clinic, Miller provides oversight to the clinic's staff of nurses and medical techs and directs the clinic's medical pursuits. Miller is a transplant to the North Florida area, as she was born in Jessup, Ga., and later moved to South Carolina.
In her youth, Miller's family moved to Madison County, Fla., bringing her into the Big Bend region and Miller stuck around, leaving only to play college softball in 1997. She still plays softball, and Miller says she can often be found playing the sport, tending to her garden or swimming whenever she's not dressed in scrubs and working as a Honey Lake nurse.
Miller has been married for 15 years to her husband, Chris Miller, and the couple has three children: Gabe, McKenzie and Marley. At Honey Lake Clinic, Miller was recently recognized as the residential treatment facility's Employee of the Year, with the clinic praising her “get it done” attitude and her dedication to overcoming challenges, solving problems and loving patients.
KRISTI LAND
Kristi Land always thought she was going to be a lawyer, but saw her choices shift quickly when a personal incident within her family caused her to realize the importance of nurses. “My younger brother suffered third-degree burns as a teenager and seeing what those nurses were capable of doing just blew me away,” says Land.
Afterwards, Land attended North Florida Community College (NFCC), from where she became a registered nurse with an Associate's degree in science; she was also trained in advanced cardiac life support and pediatric advanced life support.
After graduating as a registered nurse from NFCC, Land launched her nursing career at the Madison County Memorial Hospital. For 10 years at the hospital, Land worked the nighttime weekend shift before leaving the hospital to work at the Twin Oaks Vocational Academy (formerly known as Greenville Hills).
Land worked the day-shift at the vocational academy for nine years, where she was able to directly impact the lives of troubled young people and offered a maternal role in their lives. Then, a little over a year ago, Land's position with the academy began to close. “As doors close, others always open,” says Land.
While her job at the Twin Oaks Vocational Academy was ending, she says that the Honey Lake Clinic “came into the picture.” “One trip to Honey Lake and I was onboard,” she adds. “It is the most beautiful, peaceful place I’ve ever been.”
Now, after a year and eight months at the clinic, Land serves as the Director of Nursing. Thanks to being in the medical field for just over 20 years, Land says that she has learned true compassion. “In nursing there is no room for judgement, we get the opportunity to help people at their lowest point,” says Land. “We are able lift them up and make them feel better or at least provide comfort.” It is being able to show love to strangers, Land says, that has been so rewarding about her career as a nurse.
While nursing is undoubtably an important part of her life, she says that if she ever had to choose a different career to passionately pursue – she'd still end up helping others. But instead, she'd serve her community as a police officer. “My super power is helping others,” she says, though she's quick to quip that its a “good thing nursing worked out,” because she's much better at nursing, then enforcing laws.
She lives by the Golden Rule, saying that the rule was instilled into her by her mother at a young age. She continues to believe in the power that treating others kindly makes everyone feel equally important.
Kristi Land is a born-and-raised native of Madison County, and is married to Anthony Land; the couple has four children and three grandchildren. When she's off-duty as a nurse, Land can be found in her garden, tending to her flowers and keeping up with her kids. Land's personal motto is taken from the Bible, and is Psalms 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
In conclusion, Land says: “I have been so blessed to work along side so many awesome nurses in my career. I know that learning something new everyday helps my growth as a nurse.”
