The qualification period for candidates for public offices ended recently, with the result of three presumptive winners in local races.
The three candidates who stand unopposed are incumbent Monticello Councilman George Evans, of Group 1; incumbent Monticello Councilwoman Gloria Cox, of Group 2; and Willie Ann Dickey, the sole candidate for the School Board, District 2, seat presently occupied by longtime School Board Member Sandra Saunders.
In other offices up for election, 12 candidates remain after the qualification period, which ran June 13-17.
The local public offices still in play, and the candidates
seeking them, are as follows:
Supervisor of Elections: Althera Y. Johnson, Democrat, and Mike Fillyaw and Michelle Milligan, both Republicans.
Whoever is elected to this office will serve two years and then will have to run for reelection in 2024.
Jefferson County Commission, District 2: The two candidates in this race are incumbent Eugene Hall, Democrat, and challenger Paul Henry, Libertarian.
Jefferson County Commission, District 4: The candidates here are: incumbent Betsy Barfield, No Party Affiliation (NPA), and challenger Austin Hosford, Republican.
School Board, District 3: The candidates here are incumbent Shirley Washington, and challenger Brenda Bentley Wirick.
School Board, District 5: The candidates are incumbent Charles Boland, and challengers Mags Flynt and Ruby Grantham.
School Board races are nonpartisan.
The primary election is set for Tuesday, August 23, and the general election for Tuesday, Nov. 8.
As of Wednesday, June 22, according to the elections office, Jefferson County had a total of 9,444 voters, 4,403 of them listed as Democrats, 3,831 listed as Republicans, and 1,210 listed as other.
