Elias Vargas is a senior this year at Jefferson Somerset. This is his fourth year of running track for the Jefferson Tiger's Track Team. He ran cross-country for three years, but decided not to this year, instead he's been training for the triple jumps, and is hoping to get good scores by working out almost daily.
Vargas tried out and played football for one year during high school years but found his niche in running track under Coach Harry Jacobs.
Vargas' most recent track meet was held on Tuesday, March 10, where the Tigers competed during a home meet. He came in first place in the 100 meters hurdles (two miles), first in the 33 meters hurdles and first in the 4 x 400 relay.
His plans for the future are to be awarded a scholarship as a track athlete so he can continue his education at Tallahassee Community College or North Florida College. He'd like to study Building Science so he can get a Construction license.
Vargas has been invited to the “Down Under Sports” event in Australia, which is slated for July 3 – 13. He's been putting money away so that he can attend. He works part-time now in the construction field with a family member and hopes to hold a few fundraising events. Vargas enjoys school. And his favorite subject is English.
He credits his sister for mentoring him and preparing him for college.
He is the son of Susanna and Gerardo Vargas of Monticello and is one of nine children.
