On March 29, The Jefferson County K-12 (JCS) Flag Football Team played against their rivals, the Madison County High School (MCHS) Cowgirls. In the first quarter, Tigers quarterback Je'Mika McCray scored the first touchdown, and with Trinity Paden taking in the extra point. With this score, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead of 7-0. On the next possession, the Cowgirls came back down the field with an easy, walk-in touchdown followed but an incomplete pass denied them the extra point. The first quarter ended with the Tigers on top, 7-6.
The second quarter was scoreless.
During the third quarter, the Cowgirls had a long punt return that brought them close to the end zone. A long pass completion resulted in a touchdown to make the score 12-7 Madison, but once again the Cowgirls missed getting the extra point.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers threw an interception. The Cowgirls regained possession but ended up punting the ball back to the Tigers. Late in game, with just three minutes and 45 seconds remanding, the Tigers got the ball back, hopeful of taking back the lead. They moved the ball down the field but had to turn the ball back over on downs. When Madison got the ball back, they lost yards and had to punt. Neither team scored on their final possessions.
The Tigers dropped another game, with a final score of 12-7 Cowgirls.
After the game, Tigers Flag Football Head Coach Trey Thomas said, “Even though the team is new to each other and the game, they are slowly but surely coming into themselves, both as players and teammates.”
Coach Thomas also said that the team’s greatest strength is their ability to communicate without offending one another. It’s been a focus for our team since the beginning of the season.
The Tigers were set to wrap up their season this week, with their final game at home on April 13 against Taylor County.
