A fourth quarter flurry of scoring by the Baker High School Gators sealed the fate of the Jefferson County High School Tigers on Friday, Sept. 16, when the visiting Gators defeated the Tigers, 36-12.
After falling behind 14-0 during the first half, the Tigers cut into the Gators' lead with a touchdown in the early moments of the third period. After giving up another touchdown on the Gators' next possession, the Tigers came back with a touchdown of their own in the final moments of the third quarter. The final period began with the game still in reach for the Tigers and the score 21-12, in favor of the Gators. The Gators scored two more touchdowns in the final period of the game, while holding the Tigers scoreless.
Tiger quarterback Nkansa Langhorne, Jr. was named the Offensive Player of the Week, going 13-for-23 for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Tiger defensive end Jaylin Gilbert earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for his 10 tackles. Tiger speedster Jo'Vontrez Bellamy was the Special Teams Player of the Week for his 63-yard kick return.
The Tigers (0-4) will be seeking their first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 23, when they hit the road to Cross City to face the Bears of Dixie County High School. The Bears (1-3) are coming off a 35-0 shut-out at the hands of Chiefland High School. Kickoff for the Tigers vs. Bears contest is set for 7:30 p.m. Dixie County High School is located at 17924 SE Hwy. 19, in Cross City, Fla.
