Despite an early lead, the Jefferson County High School Tigers fell in overtime to the Bears of Dixie County High School, in Cross City, Fla., on Friday, Sept. 23. The Tigers are still searching for their first win of the season.
The Tigers struck first by outscoring the Bears, 6-0 in the first quarter. The Bears responded during the second quarter by putting up 13 points to the Tigers' eight points. At halftime, the Tigers held a slim, 14-13 advantage. Each team managed to add to their scores during the third period, which ended in a 20-20 tie. Neither team was able to put any points on the scoreboard during the final period of regulation. During the first overtime period, the Bears were able to find the end-zone while keeping the Tigers at bay. The game ended with a 26-20 score with the win going to the Bears.
Travis Keaton was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for his electrifying 67-yard kick return for a touchdown. The Offensive Player of the Week Award went to Delvin Chambers for his four pass catches for 160 yards and one touchdown. The Defensive Player of the Week for the Tigers was N'yia Coasey, who had 10 tackles and one fumble recovery.
The next game up for the Tigers will be at home against the Baby Rattlers of Florida A and M High School. The Baby Rattlers have a record of 1-2 and are coming off a 30-9 victory over Bronson High School. The game is scheduled to take place on Friday, Sept. 30, at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
