The Jefferson Somerset Tigers opened their 2020 football campaign on Friday, Sept. 4, with a resounding, 47-0, defeat at the hands of the defending state champions Madison County High School Cowboys.
After winning the opening coin toss and deferring to the second half, the Tigers kicked off to the Cowboys. On their opening drive, the Cowboys drove down the field for a touchdown. The score was 8-0, with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter. On their first possession of game, the Tigers coughed the ball up on one of several turnovers that proved to be costly for the Tigers. The fumble gave the Cowboys a short field and the home team wasted little time taking advantage. The Cowboys scored another touchdown and the score was 15-0. The stifling Cowboys defense continued to keep the pressure on the Tigers, not allowing anything to break through.
Throughout the contest, the Tiger drives seemed to result either moving backward or in a turnover giving the potent Cowboy offense a short field. About midway through the second period, the Cowboys had opened a 41-0 lead and a continuously running clock.
The Tigers were able to do little to change their fate during the second half. With the score sitting at 47-0 as the third period came to a close, the Cowboys were content to run the continuously running clock down during the final period. The game ended with the Cowboys on the dominant end of a 47-0 score.
The Tigers will attempt to regroup as they prepare to go on the road to face the Eagles of North Florida Christian School on Friday, Sept. 11. Kickoff for the contest is set for 7 p.m. North Florida Christian School is located at 3000 N. Meridian Rd., in Tallahassee.
