Despite a turbulent start to their season, the Tigers basketball team at Jefferson Somerset finally scored a win against an opposing team on Thursday, Dec. 5.
During a home game against Lafayette High School (of Mayo, Fla.), the Tigers managed to avoid being stung by the visiting Hornets in each quarter of the game.
In the first quarter, the Tigers got off to a quick start – overpowering the Hornets with a final score of 14-11 in the Tigers’ favor.
The first quarter would be the closest the Hornets came to stinging the Tigers, as the remaining three quarters continued to see the Tigers slash their opponents and maintain a lead.
The second quarter ended with a 19-8 score, followed by the third quarter with a 12-8 and the final fourth quarter with a score of 27-9.
The playing court was clearly the Tigers’ during the game against the Lafayette Hornets, but the game marked the sixth in the Tigers’ season and the first win for the Jefferson County team.
According to maxpreps.com, the Tigers began their season on Monday, Nov. 18, with a game against the Highland Christian Academy of Valdosta, Ga. The home game against the Christian school resulted in an opening-season loss for the Tigers, who fell 79-50 to the Highland Eagles.
The Tigers continued to experience losses, with a Monday, Nov. 25 game against the Leon County Lions ending with a 68-57 loss; a Tuesday, Nov. 26 game against the Sneads Pirates ending with a 65-59 loss; a Saturday, Nov. 30 game against the Gadsden County Jaguars ending with a 80-41 loss; and a Monday, Dec. 2 game against the Godby Cougars ending with 85-30 loss.
The December 5 game and its landslide win against the Lafayette Hornets might prove to be a turning point, however, in the Tigers’ season.
Tiger athletes with the most scores-per-game against the Hornets were Detrevian Nealy with 21 points, Damarius Alexander with 18 points and Elisha Clark with 15 points.
The next game for the Tigers will be a home game against the Highland Christian Academy Eagles, which will provide the Tigers an opportunity to reclaim a win from the opposing team.
The game will be hosted at the Tigers’ home court of Jefferson Somerset and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
