Dear Editor:
I grew up in Monticello (Class of 1963) and in earlier years I was involved with urban planning. In my opinion the new toll road MUST connect with I-75 to be effective. I envision it passing east of Perry, crossing I-10 around Lee, FL and connecting to I-75 south of Valdosta or maybe near Jennings, FL. This would allow an easy flow of traffic to South Florida and possibly aid in rural development. It's difficult to think that anyone would get off I-75 and travel thru some small towns to get to the toll road starting at Capps or somewhere in Jefferson County. It would just be easier to stay on I-75.
I understand some funds will be available for nearby communities. This time around Monticello and Jefferson County should strongly support a Bypass, probably on the west side where there is more growth. This would allow Monticello to get rid of the loud noisy diesel trucks that do not contribute to tourism in town. Before everyone gets upset remember Thomasville and even Perry have bypasses on US 19. This would allow the downtown to be quieter and far more conducive to tourism. Thomasville doesn't allow large trucks on Broad St. and that make dining and shopping far more pleasant than noisy Monticello. Also, the bypass would allow for new commercial development and the county would finally collect new sales and property tax revenues that it has missed out on all these years. I'm sure half the county shops in Tallahassee or Thomasville at big chain stores and grocery stores!
With its historic homes, churches, Opera House and beautiful rivers in the south of the county, Jefferson has a lot to offer tourists! I am fascinated by small towns that are successful in promoting themselves for tourists and retirees. Some of my favorites include Jonesborough, TN; Bryson City, NC; Newberry, SC; Mt. Dora, Cedar Key, Apalachicola and Fernandina, FL and Dahlonega, Madison, Milledgeville and of course Thomasville in GA.
Google the ones you aren't familiar with to find out more.
I'll go out on a limb with one more suggestion. The location of the Monticello News office across from the Opera House would make a very attractive Town Square! Imagine a park surrounded by a black metal fence with brick columns that matches the Opera House. It could have a tiered fountain in the middle and perhaps some modern play fountains and a small stage in the back. Imagine looking up at the Opera House and the Courthouse from the Square and all the community functions that could be held there!
These are just some of my thoughts to make a better and more vibrant Monticello and Jefferson County. I sincerely hope you give them serious consideration. I've been waiting 73 years to see Monticello on a "must see" small town tourist map!
Sincerely, Gene White
