Arbor Day is something that has been established for a long time, Richard Nixon proclaiming it as the last Friday in April nationally in 1970. Individual states, however, still conduct their own Arbor Day at various times of the year. Florida, along with Louisiana, is the first to celebrate Arbor Day each year on the third Friday of January. This year that is this Friday, Jan. 15. In celebration of Florida's Arbor Day, citizens are encouraged to do their part in helping to reduce air pollution, conserve energy and beautify the State of Florida by planting trees.
In celebration of Florida's Arbor Day, the Monticello Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a free tree giveaway! All county residents are welcome to come out to the Chamber, located at 420 W. Jefferson St., and pick up a tree or shrub of their choice. The trees and shrubs will be available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the limit is one tree or shrub per family while supplies last.
January is an excellent time to transplant trees, as many trees are dormant and lose less water this time of year, making them easier to transplant without stressing the tree. So head out to the Chamber this Friday and help make Jefferson County a more beautiful place to live.
