Leadership Tallahassee is a division of The Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce. It's a year-long program that educates and encourages participants to actively seek positive and constructive changes in their community through leadership roles.
Turner Beshears is just one of 30 students who have been chosen from a pool of 600 applicants. She is in her sophomore year at Maclay School in Tallahassee; a private, non-sectarian college preparatory school that goes from kindergarten through high school.
During Leadership Tallahassee, Beshears will participate in monthly sessions that focus on topics such as justice, business, economic development and the arts, while also building a network of community trustees with her fellow participants.
During her time with Leadership Tallahassee, Beshears will be able to enhance her problem solving skills and leadership abilities through shared perspectives and working together with the other participants.
The selection process for this year-long program is very competitive. In order to be selected, Beshears was recommended by one of her teachers. As a qualified applicant, she had to demonstrate leadership capabilities in the public or private sector and show a motivation to contribute to the Tallahassee community.
Grades were a factor as well. Turner stated that the interview was the most challenging and the 200 remaining students were given only five minutes to prove themselves. Fortunately, she stated, they gave her 10 minutes.
Leadership Tallahassee graduates are some of the community’s most respected and influential leaders and include elected officials, judges, CEOs of major companies and executive directors of key non-profits.
Turner is excited about her involvement in the program and is ready to begin her junior year with a meet and greet conference that will be held this summer.
Turner is the middle daughter of Halsey Beshears and Christi Beshears, and the granddaughter of Fred and Sally Beshears.
