The Jefferson County R.J. Bailar Public Library has plenty of enriching programs, activities and workshops planned for the upcoming month!
These programs will immerse attendees into different cultures, allowing an experience that extends far beyond the county line of Jefferson County.
Whether its through learning about the Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo and its health impacts and history, or creating candy-heart catapults, there is something for everyone to enjoy at the library this month!
The Jefferson County R.J. Bailar Public Library is located at 375 S. Water St., and those with questions about an upcoming event can either visit the library or give them a call at (85) 342-0205.
Didgeridoo Workshop – February 12
At the monthly Senior Coffee Social, the local library will be hosting an especially interesting program for the social's attendees!
When the social begins at 10 a.m., the senior attendees will be able to learn more about the didgeridoo, an Australian Aboriginal wind instrument.
Traditionally, the instrument would be played as an accompaniment to the ceremonial dancing, singing and recreation of Aboriginal tribes in Australia. The instrument even has health and wellness benefits, which the workshop will discuss.
This event will include free coffee and conversation to accompany this interesting, cultural experience.
Open to seniors aged 65-years and older, this social is one of the library's adult-focused groups and activities.
Catapult Creation Workshop – February 14
You won't find paper-heart valentines or sweet poems at this Valentine's Day craft session!
Youth aged six and up are invited to come to the library and create a Candy Heart Catapult – the contraption will be the perfect size to launch candy pieces across the room!
The craft session will teach kids the foundations of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in a way that is fun and interesting.
The free craft session will begin at 10 a.m., and young STEM crafters must be accompanied by an adult.
Drum of the Descendants – February 19
Drum of the Descendants, a Native American education and cultural group, will be visiting the local library to conduct an engaging and enlightening program into the traditions and culture of the Mvskogee people (sometimes known as Muskogee or Muscogee Creek people).
The Mvskogee are a native indigenous people group, whose original homelands stretched across the southeastern woodlands of Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
This event will be held during the library's Wednesday storytelling session, starting at 10:30 a.m., and families, adults and community members are all invited to attend.
Tibetan Singing Bowl Workshop – February 20
Singing Bowls are a part of the cultural history of the Tibetan people, and have, in recent years, received popularity for the relaxation, meditation and sound therapy benefits which the bowls provide.
Haven't ever heard of the bowls? This is the perfect place to witness the ringing – 'singing' – sound that the bowls make and learn more about the therapeutic benefits.
This hands-on singing bowl workshop will be an introduction to singing bowls, as workshop hosts discuss the cultural history of Tibetan Singing Bowls, explain how they are made, and how sound can affect our moods.
In the second part of the workshop, attendees will have a chance to try the bowls and create beautiful music with them.
This workshop is free and open to all ages. All materials will be provided, but attendees are invited to bring their own yoga mat or blanket to sit on.
Soul Food and Gospel Sing – February 22
What better way to celebrate the cultural heritage of African-Americans than through a soul food and gospel music sing, hosted by the local library?
From 11:30 a.m. through 1:30 p.m., the community room at the library will be full of Black History Month celebrators as they enjoy the food catered by Brooks and Banks and bask in the sound of old-fashioned gospel music, performed by Detroit Pleas.
This event will be entirely free to community members, and everyone is invited to attend, celebrate and socialize.
